Insects are part of the Chinese pictorial imaginary. On this case, it’s a virtuoso exercise from the author, who’s using two kinds of painting: the vegetables are painted on a free, impressionistic way, while the insects are richer in detail. This is typical of some of Qi Baishi’s creative periods.
