<simui> Kim Jeong Ah, W 48cm x L 135cm

The upper and lower parts of simuiwere cut separately and then sewn together at the waist. The structureof simui is meaningful – the upper part is composed of four pieces representing the four seasons, and the lower part is made of twelve pieces, representing the twelve months of the year. Black lining along the edges of simuisymbolize filial piety and respect for parents. A belt is tied around the waist and fastened witha strip of fabric called chaejo. A black official hat was worn withsimui. Many Confucian scholars depicted in portraits are shown wearing a black hat called bokgeon.
This simui was a reproduction of asimui depicted in the portrait of Kim I-an, a Joseon scholar, in the collection of Yonsei University Museum. It gives us a glimpse into lofty seonbispirit of Joseon.
