The Warsaw Uprising, the greatest military effort of the Polish Underground which began on 1 August 1944, was aimed to liberate the capital from under the German occupation and take control of the city before it was entered by the approaching Red Army. The lonely and sacrificial struggle against the German units of poorly armed insurgents supported by civilian population of Warsaw, having no expected support of Russia and the West, lasted for long 63 days.
