Polyptych of the Holy Trinity

Turone di Maxio da Camnago (documented in Verona from 1356 to1387)1360

Museo di Castelvecchio

Museo di Castelvecchio
Verona, Italy

Signed and dated 1360, the subject is the Trinity with saints Zeno, John the Baptist, Peter and Paul; the Coronation of the Virgin appears in the compartment above and figures of angels, saints and prophets adorn the frame. Two additional compartments representing the Annunciation are now in a private collection. Of Milanese origins, Turone was one of the first of a succession of Lombard artists and artisans who immigrated to Verona up through the 18th century. He established a large, flourishing studio that dominated local painting at the middle of the 14th century, bringing about the shift from the Giottesque style to a more modern Gothic one. His shop was active in every painting technique from fresco to manuscript illumination, and he received the commission for the great choir books for the cathedral of Verona.
