A landscape painter known for his port scenes, Gaston Roullet (whose father-in-law, the painter Jules Noel, lived in Quimperle) painted this landscape on a trip through Pont-Aven. This canvas in the French tradition, in the style of Corot, depicts Pont-Aven port at low tide in 1878. At the time, the port was a hub for coastal navigation, as can be seen here by the boats drawn up on the quay. Against a backdrop of poplars, a mill stands in a mass of boulders lining the river. This well-structured painting achieves a balance between sky, land and water, creating a peaceful composition in which small human figures establish the scale
