Portable chest with ivory inlay

Anonymous Northern Italian16th century - 16th century

Museo Bagatti Valsecchi

Museo Bagatti Valsecchi
Milano, Italia

Decorated with pieces of ivory and light colored woods (the back panel is plain), the cassone is of so minute and painstaking a technique that it is attributed to the monks of the Certosa. This small cabinet with a large wrought iron lock has a pull down front panel that reveals sixteen small inlaid drawers. The corners and edges are in wrought iron. The feet were added at a later date. Probably purchased by the brothers Fausto and Giuseppe at the end of the 19th century, the chest is still displayed--as are all other objects in the museum--in its original place, thus contributing to the authentic "time capsule" ambiance.
