Strozzi, a Capuchin friar from Genoa, was active in Venice during the last part of his career. Although only sketchily suggested, the drapery, column and puffed costume give the figure a vivacious and slightly pompous air, fully baroque in taste. The paint is applied thickly with dense brushstrokes; the predominantly sober colors are interrupted by vivid dashes of white and red.
