Portrait of the chemist and politician José Giral (1879-1962). A close friend of Miguel de Unamuno, he was a professor of chemistry and a driving force behind the Republican Action party. In 1931, he was appointed rector of the Central University and elected to Parliament. Following the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, he served as Prime Minister of the Republic from July to September 1936.
