The painter Francisco Pacheco (1564-1644), Velázquez's teacher and father-in-law, made a series of portraits of illustrious men of his time accompanied by biographical sketches, which were collected in a manuscript dated 1599 that he never published. The portraits were dispersed after the death of the painter and the first facsimile edition of the manuscript, now owned by the Lázaro Galdiano Foundation, would not be published until 1881.The copy in the General Archives of Andalusia belonged to the Library of the Artillery Factory of Seville.
