Praça da Liberdade (Liberty Square), whose space is closely linked to Avenida dos Aliados (Avenue of the Allies), running northwards from it, accompanied the city of Porto’s expansion and its key historical incidents. This square has thus witnessed various changes to its name over the centuries: Praça Nova (New Square), Praça de D. Pedro (King Peter’s Square), (Praça da Liberdade (Liberty Square) or simply Praça (Square). Despite its small size, it boasts in its center the monument to D. Pedro IV, inaugurated in 1866, which honors the city’s liberator.
