Located on the site of the old Mercado do Anjo (Angel’s Market), the Jardim das Oliveiras (Olive Tree Garden) is a distinct feature of the recently configured Praça de Lisboa (Lisbon Square), designed by Balonas & Menano in 2013. Its aim is to give continuity to the space of the Jardim da Cordoaria and Praça Gomes Teixeira, evoking the name of the Porta do Olival (Olive Grove Gate), one of the exits from the medieval walled city. Its contemporary design contrasts with one of the city’s best known pairs of buildings, the Clérigos (Clerics’) Church and Tower.
