This was a symbolic award that was used to encourage study, discipline, and good behavior. To cultivate favorable habits, certain objects were used to recognize students' merits. These included an honor roll, a dishonor roll, and medals of merit, conduct, diligence, performance, etc. Publishing houses listed various objects in their inventories of school supplies. Such items were more common in religious schools than public schools.
