Portrait of Prof FP Smit by the South African artist, Cyril Coetzee (b.1936). Prof Phillipus Smit (b. 1936) was the ninth Principal of the University of Pretoria and his tenure stretched between 1992 and 1996. The official collecting of portraits and the foundation of the Collection began on 9 September 1974. Prof A.N. Pelzer suggested that the University commence a collection of portraits of previous Chancellors, Chairs of the Council and Principals. Between 1974 and 2010, the line-up of former Principals and Chancellors were completed, a tradition that is still continuing with new appointments. Short Biography: Cyril Coetzee was born in 1959 in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape. He studied at Rhodes University and obtained his Masters qualification in 1983.
