Although viticulture has ancient roots in this region, the creation of the Demarcated Region and the founding of the Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro [General Company of Alto Douro Viticulture] (1756) gave new life to the settlements and brought renewed wealth. In 1761, Provesende was the main producer of white company wine (for export). Between 1834 and 1853, it was elevated to municipality. This prosperity is evident in the wealth of the heritage found in the town, particularly notable in the high number of noble houses. The more rural area is found to the extreme west of the town. Construction here is less concentrated, and there is space for larger vineyards and manor houses.
