Head design includes both the head and headgear. The greater the collection of puppet head designs in a shadow puppet troupe, the wider the range of plays and characters the troupe can offer. The head designs in the picture cover all the roles in a shadow puppet play, including Sheng, Dan, Jing, Mo, and Chou. They were made by the founder of the Wang School of Shadow Puppetry, Wang Shicheng, during the fifth year of Emperor Kangxi’s reign (1666).
