The first railway system in Peru and South America was inaugurated during the 19th century, back in 1851, with the Lima-Callao route, nowadays disappeared. Until the firsts decades of the 20th century, Peru experienced a period of railway growth that managed to reach 3175 kilometers enabled for this transport. The introduction of this system meant an important contribution to economic development and the social movement. However, as the historian Jorge Basadre writes, "the railroads, mostly, were not completed within the stipulated deadlines, and they raised complex problems around their financing, or their administration or their termination."
