Rapier

Sword with boat-shaped hilt, extending into which is the cup forming the guard. The quillons are animal-shaped and the pommel has the shape of a human head.
The blade is double-edged with a groove (fuller) along the first quarter.

The blade has the inscription: "ANTONIO // RUIZ EN TOLEDO". Antonio Ruiz was swordmaker to the King and also worked in Madrid when he moved to the royal court.

The rapier is characterised as being an everyday, more manageable sword than other types because of its narrow blade. With the spread of this kind of sword, fencing became more dependent on the gentleman's skill rather than his arm power.
