Around 600 BC, iron was gradually replacing bronze as the most important raw material in northern Germany. Initially, only small implements like needles could successfully be wrought from this new metal. Larger implements such as axes, knives, tools and weapons, which still resemble our present-day tools in form, only began to emerge when iron technology had been further developed.
