Second to gold, silver was considered a valuable raw material. In Roman times, when the needles and the brooch on display here were made, Germanic artisans crafted these pieces of jewellery from molten-down Roman denarii. The Germanic people knew no silver deposits or silver mining of their own. Also in the Viking Age, silver was very much sought after, evidence of which may be seen in this bracelet made from twisted wires.
