The founding deed of the Real Club Recreativo de Huelva soccer team was signed at Hotel Colón on December 23, 1889, making it the oldest soccer club in Spain.

The British who were mining in the north of the province would play their traditional sports, including soccer, and the game quickly caught on amongst the locals. A number of British businessmen joined forces with some of the locals to create a sports club. At first, they played against British sailors or workers from the Rio Tinto Company Limited.

The tournament organized by the Seamen’s Institute was first played in November 1904, in a match between “El Recre” and the sailors of the Seaman’s Institute at the Huelva Velodrome. They played for a silver cup. After several matches, Recreativo de Huelva took the trophy. Daily Odiel.
