Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered feudal lords to dispatch troops to Korea in order to conquer Ming in 1592. By this order, the troop led by the Lord Tachibana Muneshige of the Yanagawa domain is considered to have crossed the sea to Korea in April of the same year.
On January 27th, 1593, the Ming and Korean allied forces and Japanese force clashed in Hekitenkai (northwest of Seoul). Muneshige led the Japanese force to victory as a spearhead in this battle and his military fame had spread throughout Japan.
In this letter, Hideyoshi praised Muneshige’s distinguished military service. However, Muneshige lost nearly 500 of his vassals in this battle.
