Medusa, one of the three ghastly sisters known as the Gorgons, is shown with a frightful face, bulging eyes and snakes instead of hair. She looked so terrible that anyone who saw her was turned to stone. Perseus cut off her head and presented it to Minerva. Medusa’s head is often shown on the shield of Minerva and serves as a protective talisman.
