Relief Tribunal

Artus Quellinus the Elder1650 - 1652

Royal Palace Amsterdam

Royal Palace Amsterdam
Amsterdam, Netherlands

This large relief shows three scenes of justice being done: the scene on the left symbolises Mercy, the one in the centre Wisdom and the one on the right Justice. The three reliefs are separated by two pairs of large caryatids. Between the two caryatids on the left is the old symbol of the city of Amsterdam, a ‘cog’ (trading ship) and between the two on the right the city’s new symbol, the three Saint Andrew’s crosses.
