Around the early hours of May 10, 1943, a great fire consumed much of the then National Library of Peru. Several fire companies were coming to the call, among them Roma N ° 1, Cosmopólita, France N ° 2, Miraflores N ° 1, Rímac N ° 8, Grau de Barranco, and Olaya de Chorrillos. The firefighters managed to rid the buildings adjoining the library from the flames. At dawn, the disaster seemed under control; although some companies took turns to guard the facilities, in case the fire reignited.
