A spur is a bent piece of metal with a point or a rowel attached to a riding boot which is used for riding. In the Middle Ages, a squire received a pair of spurs during the bestowal of his knighthood as a sign of his new status. Yet, he could only “earn his spurs” by proving himself in person during a battle or at a tournament.
