One of the most outstanding masters of Dutch local landscape. Born in Naarden, active in Haarlem (1623–1670). His early works show the in uence of Esaias van de Velde (1587–1630) and Jan Porcellis (1584–1632). Father of landscapist Jacob Salamonsz van Ruysdael (1629/1630–1681) and cousin of Jacob van Ruysdael (1628/1629–1682). The styles of the three artists are interrelated. In “River Landscape”, the silvery grey cloudy sky in the evening summer sun and the shadows of the bushy banks are reflected in the calm waters of the river. There’s an oarsman and the occasional duck. The palette of colours is soft, almost monochrome.
