Afurada’s geographical location and its dominant occupation put its people at great risk. As in other coastal areas of Portugal, this community has endured moments of anguish and sadness, having been marked by several shipwrecks leaving a large number of orphans and widows in their wake. Such catastrophes inflicted by nature on maritime communities foster religious fervour.
