Rooster and Willow

Itō Jakuchū

Fukuda Art Museum

Fukuda Art Museum
Kyoto, Japan

A rooster, standing on one leg, faces the front of the composition, as elegant willow branches hang from above. The rooster’s cockscomb and head are outlined with black ink, and the feathers on its neck are spread. Just above the rooster, the willow branches have been painted in layers of different shades of black ink, with the lightest shade in the back, creating the illusion of depth, and of the moonlight shining between the branches.
