This photograph of Rundle Street, South Australia is from the book 'Roads and bridges of South Australia' by John Bradfield.

Rundle Street is considered the retail heart of the city of Adelaide, and is the site of ambitious building projects since the 1860s. Seen here is the heritage-listed Birks department store which opened in 1864.

Most famously known for the design and construction of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge, Dr. J.J.C. Bradfield created a collection of 15 books documenting the early construction of Australia's roads, bridges and railways from the late 19th century through to the mid-20th century.
