Cane handle with a figure of Justice

Unknown

The Victoria and Albert Museum
London, United Kingdom

This handle of a cane is made by an unknown artist in Germany in ca. 1830-1850.
It is of ivory carved with grotesque heads and with a figure of Justice along the top. Justice is leaning back, and resting her head upon a dragon's head. The unusual style of the piece suggests it was produced in Germany in the first half of the nineteenth century, although it may have been made in imitation of the work of the early eighteenth century.
