Fragments of a painted polyptych - Saint Francis

Francesco Morone

Museo di Castelvecchio

Museo di Castelvecchio
Verona, Italy

The panels with the saints Bartholomew and Francis formed the predella of a Crucifixion, signed by Francesco Morone and dated 1498, which was originally located in the chapel of the Cross, in the church of San Bernardino.

In comparison the treatment of color in the picture of Saint Francis is limited to a monochrome with mere variations of lighting. Here the calibrated lighting achieves results similar to those of Flemish painting, which is most evident in the play of light and shade on the hands of the saint.
