The depiction was painted by Jan Matejko's student Ferdinand Olesinski specifically for the main altar of the newly established St. Kinga Chapel in 1895. The painting illustrates the legend of the discovery of salt in Wieliczka and depicts St. Kinga with her traditional attributes of a lump of rock salt with a ring. In 1914, a figure of St. Kinga, carved in salt, was inserted in place of the painting.
