The work depicts Saint Paul half-length with his face turned to the left and his hand resting on the hilt of a sword, which stands out against the darkly pictorial draft of the head. The usual expedient of spatial projection is applied to the image, which dilates the hands and heads in the foreground, overwhelming the entire visual field with them.
