Sant'Anna Metterza

Giovanni Zabellana (Verona 1457 ca. - 1504 ca.)second half of the 15th century

Museo di Castelvecchio

Museo di Castelvecchio
Verona, Italy

This beautiful sculpture is a late work by Zebellana which testifies eloquently – primarly through Anne’s stern and very human figure – to the expressive maturity achieved by the artist. The original polychromy is preserved only in the complexions and exhibits the usual delicacy in the faces and naturalistic details, such as the pale blue veins running along the back of the hands.
