This secretary and bookcase are tall in response to the high ceilings of southern houses, which adapted regional architecture to a hot climate. The birch is stained to resemble mahogany, a feature common in Georgia work. It is an outstanding statement of American federal style with influence from the Charleston neoclassical school. Scholar Robert Leath recently identified James Alexander Jr. as its likely maker.
