Nuremberg-based motorcycle manufacturer Zündapp began making the KS 601 in 1951. Because of its lime-green paint job and its tremendous torque, it was nicknamed "the Green Elephant." For years, the "Elephants" dominated the reliability and off-road competitions that were very popular at the time.
