Shape of Space V

“Forma no Espaço V” (Shape of Space V) is part of a series of sculptures designed by Oscar Niemeyer. The red and sinuous shapes are present in several cities, such as Rio de Janeiro, Brasília and even Monterrey, Mexico. They refer to the sickle, once attached to the hammer on the flag of the Soviet Union, revived by the architect as a reminder that society rests on the shoulders of the countryside and city worker. Oscar Niemeyer was born in 1907, in Rio de Janeiro (RJ). He graduated in 1934 at the National School of Fine Arts, obtaining the diploma of Architect Engineer. With works involving originality Niemeyer soon reached international renown. Throughout his career he designed several buildings in Brazil and abroad, which earned him awards and recognition as an exponent of architecture. Among his projects are the Museum of Contemporary Art in Niterói (RJ), headquarters of Editora Mondadori, in Italy, and the set of works in Brasília (DF), which comprises the Palácio da Alvorada, Planalto, the Cathedral and others. He died in Rio de Janeiro (RJ) in 2012.
