After the great fire that affected the National Library of Peru in May 1943, a reconstruction phase ensued. This implied a plan led by a commission, whose purposes were not only to supervise the construction of a new building, but also to see its implementation by receiving donations -material and economic-, making book purchases, and specifying the cataloging of the collections.
Individuals, civil organizations, institutions of all kinds and various friendly countries expressed their support for the BNP through letters of solidarity, collections and donations of money, and the delivery of books. In 1945, Basadre reported a report where he pointed out that after the fire, just over 5,000 books and more than half a million soles had been donated by Peruvian people and institutions.
