Born in Beppu city, Shono Shounsai (1904-1974), began making Beppu bamboo basketry in 1923. By experimenting in formative expressions and maximizing the unique beauty of the material, he expanded the possibilities of bamboo crafts taking the art to new levels. Then, in 1967 Shono was designated as the first Important Intangible Cultural Asset holder (Living National Treasure) for bamboo crafts.
