The new headquarters of the National Library of Peru was inaugurated on March 27, 2006. The land located in the district of San Borja, was transacted in 1991 by the then director of the BNP, Juan Mejía Baca; but various difficulties impeded the development of the project. The first stage of construction began in 1996, although it soon came to a halt, and was later resumed in 2004.
The project was chossen by competition, with a jury made up of librarians and architects. The selected design was prepared by the architects Guillermo Claux, Augusta Estremadoyro, Franco Vela and Walter Morales.
With the inauguration of the new headquarters, the historic library located in Cercado de Lima, became the Great Public Library of Lima.
