Hiraki Sawa’s videofilms works document segments of everyday life to create a dream-like image and brings together various objects for reconstruction, recreation and replacement. The result is an image that is both realistic and imaginary, a manifestation of his personal daydreaming.
Sleeping Machine is inspired by the artist’s personal experience. It is a quiet world of the deranged. Only the gears and clocks in the obscure corners of the room carry on running as they’re designed to, tick-tocking away in inexplicable patterns. The sleeping machine is the result of many nameless stories. The work explores the theme of memory loss by reminiscing the past and the transient spaces. The final product is an image that is surreal and poetic.
