William Morris Gallery
Walthamstow, London, United Kingdom

This rug was designed by Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo and produced by hand at William Morris's home and workshop at Upper Mall, Hammersmith. The weavers worked from a pattern marked up on squared paper, or point paper, where each square indicated a single knot (see for example William Morris Gallery BLA451). Mackmurdo designed this rug for Morris and Co. before starting his own business, The Century Guild, with his friends and fellow artists Herbert Percy Horne and Selwyn Image.
