The soldier portrayed by Crocetti has a melancholic expression and careful typical of a person who carries a cumbersome amount of experience. The inquiring and observant look seems to know what he’s looking at already. Even though the position that the bust hints at is clearly related to the roman busts from the imperial period (I-II century A.D.) for its frontal portrayal of the shoulders and the slight torsion of the face at three quarters, in this soldier’s look there’s no trace of pride unlike the classic roman portraits, but the reality of an uncomfortable and solitary life.
