Roman gold coins, so-called solidi, were used to pay Germanic warriors who had served their term as soldiers in the Roman army and had returned home. The terms soldier, soldier of fortune, and solid derive from these solidi. This solidus from Hamburg-Eppendorf show the Emporer, Arcadius, who ruled the Eastern Roman Empire from 395 to 408 AD.
