Born in Argentina in 1899, Luciano Fontana was an artist representing the 20th century Italy. He studied at an art school in Milan and began producing abstract sculptures around 1930. In 1947 Fontana launched manifesto of Spatialism. Fontana’s experimental works with sharp slashes and holes shattered traditional stereotypes about art and were huge stimuli to the development of post-World War II art.
Space Concept Waiting has several sharp vertical slashes on the horizontal canvas painted evenly in white. The canvas with several slashes forces viewers to confront the fact that a painting is just a piece of cloth stretched on a wooden frame. Deep darkness spreads beyond the cuts, which may be described “violent,” on the canvas. By slashing the canvas, Fontana succeeded in gaining infinite space connecting to the universe of his painting.
