The landscape has long been a defining aspect of Canada’s national identity and a constant subject of Coupland’s explorations. In Spectra Four Seasons, he represents the natural world more obliquely by using an array of pencil crayons enclosed in a Plexiglas case. Through their manner of display, he evokes both the horizontal terrain that surrounds us and the visibly changing seasons of a northern climate through the specific tonal ranges of the pencils.
