Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada

One of the lesser-known businesses that developed on the creek was Stamford Springs Brewery.
This company was established by John Sleeman (yes, that Sleeman!) in 1836. While his business was a success, the pollution along the creek, due to a large number of mills and factories, began to affect the product. In 1847, he sold the brewery and moved his enterprise to Guelph, Ontario.
In the 1850s, Stamford Springs Brewery eventually came under the ownership of James Oswald and, by 1876, he had significantly expanded his operation to include several buildings. By 1916, the brewery had closed and the property was converted into a dance hall and a spring water bottling plant.
