Black-and-white photographic portrait of Stanhope Spencer Johnson (1882–1973). From 1954 to 1965, Stanhope Johnson served as the head restoration architect, overseeing the reconstruction of Patrick Henry's Red Hill to its 18th-century form.
Johnson was a prolific Virginia architect from Lynchburg. His most famous buildings are urban landmarks, including the Allied Arts Building (Lynchburg, Virginia), Washington Duke Hotel (Durham, North Carolina), and Carolina Theatre and Hotel (Winston-Salem, North Carolina). He first came to Red Hill around 1909 as a draftsman with the architectural firm of McLaughlin, Pettit and Johnson. In this capacity, he assisted in expanding the Henry family home into a large mansion to plans designed by architect Charles Barton Keene.
