A native of France, Theophile Auguste Stahl set about documenting the urban landscape of Pernambuco starting in 1853. In the early 1860s he would open a studio on Rua do Ouvidor, in Rio. In 1868 he documented the construction of Brazil’s second rail line, the Recife and S. Francisco Railway, as well as Emperor D. Pedro II’s visit to Recife the following year.
