The artist, from 1602 Master of the St Lucas Guild in Antwerp, was one of the first exponents of the new genre of still life, referred to as the ‘laden table‘ style. His compositions had a moralistic nature, the pictured oysters and wine, considered aphrodisiacs, are symbols of debauchery, the image of Vanitas and a reminder of the transience of things.
